Look For Less – Home Edition: Kid’s Bathroom “Remodel”

I’ve been so excited to get this bathroom finished up so I could share it with you! While I would normally make a trip to HomeGoods/TJ Maxx to find some finishing decor touches, I used what I had to make due.

Background…

When we moved in we knew there were projects we wanted to tackle right away. I don’t know about you, but I created a master home checklist that has every project we’ve done, the vendor/company/contractor that was used, projects in the future as well as cost estimates thrown in there as well. First up on the list when we moved in was AC installation.

We have baseboard heating in our house so there was no duct work and the AC company had to start from scratch – running duct work throughout the house.

I will save that project story for another day in case some of you deal with the same issue, but basically our master goal/remodel list for our house also included updating all the bathrooms as well.

When the contractor came over to cut holes through the tile in the downstairs bathroom, I told him of our plans to change out the flooring in the bathroom and he told me it would be a way bigger/harder job than expected.

Basically tile flooring had been stacked up one on top of the other (a solid 4 inch thick slab of tiles) making it super difficult to cut the square out for the vent.

A Look at the Downstairs Bathroom project I am talking about, below:

Here’s the post with all the details on that bathroom.

Since the AC project was a huge expense and we were trying to minimize costs…

I looked into the possibility of painting over existing tile and then stumbled upon the peel and stick flooring. I could not believe how realistic the flooring looked and the price – HOLY SMOKES – $35 to do a whole bathroom floor!

Once I found this solution, we agreed to do a little face lift on each of the bathrooms. Even if it was just a short term fix, we could live with it! The other nice thing is you can simply peel them off if you don’t like them – it is not an entirely permanent solution.

With a fresh coat of paint on the walls, cabinet and the peel and stick tile – here’s a look at the kid’s updated bathroom.

We painted the walls “Hinting Blue” by Sherwin Williams

Cabinet paint color is “On The Rocks” Sherwin Williams (which is actually our kitchen cabinet color.

I am SO SO pleased with how this space turned out! It looks 1,000% times better and I no longer am cringing when I walk into the space. It is so crazy what a little paint and neutral flooring can do to a space!

Create a master “goal/remodel” list for your house and adjust as needed. I know I personally can get antsy and want to have the whole house updated the way we want it, but that’s just not feasible financially. My husband and I discuss the projects we had marked down for the year and check off the ones that make the most sense and are affordable for us.

Though we had plans to remodel the bathrooms – we kept in mind our master plan (hopefully remodeling the kitchen and relocating the downstairs bathroom) and opted for a quick/inexpensive update. There are SO many amazing and innovative products out there now-a-days that it is super easy to update a space without breaking the bank.
