Look for Less: Home Edition – Bathroom Floor Remodel

Happy Friday everyone, I hope you all had an amazing week! I feel like everyone is freaking out about back to school already—how can this be?! I would totally feel the same way if my kiddos were older—I am even getting sad thinking about my daughter being gone for half the day only three days a week!

As I mentioned in my Weekend Top 4, I was going to do a post on the new floor we put in our main floor bathroom. Guys, this floor was just something I could not put up with much longer. I didn’t want to break the bank by any means, but something NEEDED.TO.BE.DONE!

We had a brand a new air conditioning unit installed in this house (we have baseboard heating, so there was no ductwork for the AC – what an undertaking that was). The point of me sharing that tidbit is that when they were drilling through the tile floor to cut out spots for the vents, they could not believe how thick the tile was underneath. The contractor basically expressed some concern about our long term home plans to remodel the whole downstairs and that the tile removal would be quite a job!

I was just not diggin’ the fact that we could be stuck with staring at that flooring for another 5-10 years! I then started searching easy tile remodeling tips and painting tile floors was something I saw on Pinterest. After looking into things further, that is when I stumbled on Peel and Stick Tile flooring.

I seriously could not believe the selection out there- like honestly this flooring looked so legit and was SO INEXPENSIVE! There are so many options you can choose from in so many color variations –marble, travertine and wood look, and also there are some styles that are even groutable.

We decided to go with the dark wood look – it matched the vanity and trim which is something I am actually not too bothered by. I wanted something darker because that tile showed every little dust, hair and dirt particle and I found myself constantly cleaning it. Now I have zero worries when people stop over! The floor always is looking clean!

There were amazing advantages for using this flooring and these are the reasons we decided to go this route:The total cost of the flooring was $32. Yes, ONLY $32 to do our 25 sq. ft. bathroom!

The flooring was super easy to lay—no tile removal was needed, no leveling—you just peel and stick right over your existing tile flooring

The thickness was perfect given the fact we were already maxed out with laying another thick tile over the existing. Also, we were able to basically score the top of the tile with the razor then fold back and forth on that line until it snapped off cleanly

The vinyl is waterproof  – perfect for a full bath

No need to tile cutting – we literally were able to use a razor and scissors even for the intricate cuts

Did I mention the total cost to complete this project was $32 plus 4 husband labor hours?!

I mean, how amazing does that look! We are going to do this for the master and the kids bathrooms as well and I will definitely keep you posted on those projects with some before and after pics too!

Well, this is actually two cents from my father-in-law – he saved us a ton of time by mentioning that if you have an existing floor with grout lines all you need to do is line up your first pieces right on either sides of the grout lines. The hard work of finding the floor’s center had already been done for us.

Make sure you clean your floors and take the time to measure things precisely – it will save you a lot of time and eliminate the amount of pieces you waste. You should always place any manual cut sides to line on the trim/floor moulding—that way you are always working with the flat edge when aligning with the other pieces which eliminates gaps.

I did read that it is recommended to use a bond enhancer – we did not use one, but this also is going to be something we won’t have long term as we plan to redesign this area of our house– it really is a temporary fix. Here is a link to the Bond Enhancer.

Lastly, make sure you save any scrap pieces that you had to cut down—we were able to utilize a lot of those pieces around the toilet area and any quirky spots.
