Tip Jar Tuesday: Cleaning Your Washing Machine

It’s Tip Jar Tuesday and today, I’m sharing how to clean your washing machine. Super riveting, I KNOW, but so so important – and something people often overlook! This is how I clean my LG front loader machine.

My Go-To Washing Machine Cleaning Routine

First and foremost, vinegar is a great all-purpose house cleaner and something you should always have hanging around your house. It can be used for SOO many things. I use a 1:1 ratio vinegar to water in a spray bottle and use when needed. I like to use the diluted vinegar spray for disinfecting my cool mist humidifiers, cleaning my microwave, dishwasher, garbage cans and Kuerig from time to time.

To clean your washing machine, you will need vinegar, a diluted vinegar spray, shallow dish/bowl or cookie sheet and a cloth/towel.

I like to start at the bottom of the machine at the drain plug filter. It is recommended to clean this area on a monthly basis.

Coins, buttons and other lost items can wind up in this filter and start to hurt your machine if too much accumulates over time.

Using a shallow dish or bowl, I placed under the access panel – unplugged the drain plug and let it drain into the bowl. NOTE: you can pull on the drain hose to get a little more length and have it reach your bowl.

YUCK!!!

Next, I twisted off the filter (it shows you which way to turn) pulled it out and cleaned it under the sink!

I reinserted the filter and twisted until it was completely shut and tight.

Next, I run a regular cotton cycle using vinegar in the detergent compartment. I just fill it to the top!

After the cycle is done, I then use my diluted vinegar to spray down the rubber gasket and inside of the tub.

YUCKYYYYY!

After everything is sprayed down on the inside, I run the “TUB CLEAN” Cycle.

I let that cycle run, its about an hour and a half.

After that’s complete, I open the machine back up and wipe down the tub and gasket with a towel/cloth.

And there you have it! A nice and clean washing machine!
