Spring Garden Tour: 2021 Plans

Today’s post is all about my gardening plans this growing season. I have been continuing to sow seedlings to get a jump start on the season and have finally mapped out my plans for the cut flower area and would love to share that with you.

First off, I love how everything is in bloom! Our trees are starting to get filled with more and more buds and green leaves, the grass is looking super green and my flowers are returning from their winter sleep!

I wanted to show you some of my seedling trays. I’ve been learning a lot this year in terms of how to speed up germination and ways to save space in my basement. I am absolutely LOVING hardy annuals. Normally, you can plant the seeds out in the fall and they will pop up when ready in spring – BUT as you will see, I didn’t have the garden ready for that this season. Instead, you can start hardy annual seedlings outside by making tiny greenhouses from milk cartons and even lettuce/produce containers. This method is working great and I already have a nice jump on the season!

Ignore my crummy illustration, but here is my plan for expansion in the back! This year I am adding so many new varieties of plants and trying to get a lot more greenery as I didn’t have enough for bouquets last year.

As you can see I’m adding 2 – 4ft by 25ft beds flanking the existing beds, adding 15 feet to one of the beds and putting in two 4ft by 11ft beds strictly for dahlias!

I didn’t want to push out too far into the backyard even though there is a lot of space back there, so I thought it would be perfect to add 3 – 4ft x 12ft beds on the side of our second garage.

This area gets plenty of sunlight and doesn’t really interfere with play space in our backyard, so I’m pleased to make this change.

Some flowers I’m incorporating to my cut garden beds this year include: Bachelors Button, Basil, Bells of Ireland, Snapdragons, Amaranth, Celosia, Cress, Orach, Queen Anne’s Lace, Sunflowers and tripling my dahlia production from my overwintered plants
