What’s trending around our house lately? Homemade trail mix! Not only do the kids love this snack, they also had a blast filling their own containers with goodies. The whole process was a nice activity for them – they absolutely loved it and felt in control – which is good for them!
I used to make my own Monster mix trail mix back in high school/college because the premade bags were SO EXPENSIVE. I was always very particular with what was in the mix too – so making your own is a great way to control what goes in!
I had purchased some Trail Mix on the Go snack packs from Aldi and the kids finished them SO quick! I would find half eaten bags around the house and I just felt like enough is enough! No longer would we be wasteful!
Putting the trail mix into their own canisters or containers worked out perfectly – I was able to scoop a little at a time and control their portion size during snack time!
Here are some of the nuts and fixin’s we used in our trail mix.
- Salted Peanuts – I got a big container of peanuts at Walmart
- Almonds – I decent sized bag of almonds
- Sunflower seeds
- Mini pretzels – a nice big bag of these – a total favorite!
- Raisins
- Yogurt covered raisins
- Peanut butter M&M’s
- Reese’s pieces
- White chocolate chips
- Chocolate chips
- M&M’s
I filled up the mason jars with different fixins, gave them some scoops and let the kids go to work!
They absolutely loved making their own Trail Mix!
An activity/something to keep them busy: CHECK
A great snack to have handy around the house: CHECK
Two WINS in my book!
What are your favorite trail mix combinations?! I really do want to switch it up next time we do these – one thing to note – I am NOT a dried fruit type person, no clue why, but I am always avoiding those trail mixes!
Happy Thursday everyone!
