Let’s Look: Easter at Our House

Today, I’m linking up with some of my favorite blogs to share a look inside Easter at our house. WOW, this post – so so fun to do, but also had me crying A TON. I was browsing my pictures looking through old videos and pictures to show you some examples of some traditions we have carried over from our families and sheesh did it bring on the waterworks.

Easter is my FAVORITE – not only the significance of this Holy Day – but I also love all the colors associated with this holiday and its’ season. Once we celebrate Easter, I start itching to get in the flower beds outside, wishing for warm weather to stay and start looking forward to many days spent outside!

Now, here’s a look at how we do Easter at our house! It is going to be sad that Easter will be celebrated a little different this year, but we will try to make the most of it…

Good Friday

On Good Friday, I make sure this day is VERY low key. I’m not sure why I do it but I try to emulate the mood and continuously think about His suffering throughout the day. A tradition for me, I reread the story of the passion between 12pm -3pm. This year I plan to watch the stations of the cross recorded from my Uncle’s church.

Another tradition, my husband and I always watch the Passion movie. It’s raw and makes you appreciate His sacrifice. A takeaway for me, I appreciate being able to “witness” His humanly feelings in preparation for the suffering that He was to go through. You always read about it, but to see it gives me 10000% more understanding of the pure love He has for us all. He was scared and asked God if it was possible to “let this cup pass from me”.

Another movie we love, The Shack. If you want to ball your eye’s out for 2 hours straight, this is the movie. To me, it puts things in perspective and can be that reset button I need. The movie seriously moves me every.single.time.

Easter Vigil Tradition

My husband’s family has thee sweetest and most unique tradition that I am so happy I was introduced to. When my husband was little, every Easter was spent at his Grandparents house in Pennsylvania. On the Vigil, they would hold their annual Easter Egg Coloring contest. This is not just any old dip the egg in dye and call it a day coloring contest – this involves a big ole’ bin of craft supplies and creativity! Cash prizes were given for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place – it sounded pretty intense and competitive!

When I was lucky enough to start attending this contest (we were in college), I remember thinking how sweet of a tradition that was. Flash forward nearly ten years and this is something we will continue to do with his family and hope that our children will carry it on to their family someday!

Here are some past egg contest submissions (sorry for some poor quality graphics!):

BRB…CRYING!!!

Easter Sunday

We wake the kiddos up pretty early in order to do our Easter basket hunt (another tradition from my husband’s family I will explain below) so we can head to an earlier morning mass time.

Easter Basket Hunt

My husband’s parents would hide their Easter baskets when they were kids and they would have to search the house to find them. This has been so much fun to do for our kids – the look of excitement on their face when they find the basket is SO cute! These are screenshots of them finding the baskets and unveiling each!

Beauty and the Beast themed basket…
Spring things basket…rainboots, shorts, t-shirts, pajama dresses, sunglasses!
Functional basket…the kids got their own sets of plates, bowls, cups and silverware, a new water bottle, etc.

We try to allow ourselves a decent amount of time (~30-45 minutes) for the kids to open, eat a little candy and check out some of their toys before getting them ready for church.

Easter Basket Goodies

I shared how I do Easter baskets – linked here. I love to get things that are functional including toys and clothing for the warm weather ahead!

I also will generally do about 2 baskets per kid and then a collective basket that has a toy they can both use together! This year it is this bug kit!

We get in our Easter Sunday best and head out the door for mass! The kids get a quick breakfast on the fly and I load my bag with a whole lot of snacks! This year we will watch the Easter service from our family room. My Uncle is a Pastor at a local church so we will watch his service.

After mass, we stop by my parents house for Breakfast/Brunch with my brothers and their families

Everyone will generally split around 1 pm so we will hang around for a little bit before we head over to my in-laws house (they live a street away from my parents house 🙂

We have dinner at my in-laws house with my husband’s parents and siblings, which is always so delicious!

It is wild how quickly the day moves, but that is a look at our Easter! i normally bring desserts or side dishes to our parents houses, but now that this year is different, I will be cooking our Easter meal.

Our dinner menu this year

We plan to have a similar menu to what we normally have at our parents house

Spiral Ham

Cheesy potatoes

Green bean casserole

Salad

Dinner rolls

Sugar cookie cut outs

Fruit salad

probably some chocolate dessert too!!

You can check out the tablescape I have set up for this year since we are going to be home

Easter this year may involve a lot of FaceTime. Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter!

Those eggs are fantastic!! My mom used to hide our Easter gifts too; I still remember the year we were living at our memere’s house temporarily and they hid Cabbage Patch dolls for my older sister and I.
