Thrifty Thursday – How I Shop for Baby Supplies

This week I wanted to share some ways I save when it comes to all things baby.

First off, taking three kiddos out and about particularly during this phase in life is quite an endeavor. I used to do it with two a lot more often and now I am opting for online shopping since we live in a world of 1-2 day shipping! I purchase my baby products via Target because I think I end up saving more the way I do it (I had an excel sheet breaking down costs including the gift cards I would receive, ha!)and I really love their Up&Up brand.

Today I wanted to share the cycle I follow in terms of baby supplies, baby food, and diapering.

Baby deals

The most frequent deal I use is the spend $100 in baby supplies get a $20 Target gift card. With this deal I usually end up buying 2-3 packs of diapers (we still have 2 kiddos in diapers) and then a big pack of the Up & Up baby wipes.

First off, I love these wipes. They smell great, don’t dry out and have been very gentle on all three of my kiddos bums! Highly recommend these and very inexpensive as well.

I haven’t explored other diapers (i.e. Costco Kirkland brand I have heard great things, but I can’t make the jump) I have been extremely pleased with Pampers Swaddlers. I am always mind boggled when talking to other Mom’s when they say they are obsessed with Huggies because NO JOKE – a blowout or wetting incident occurs 9 times out of 10 when our kids wore Huggies. How can diapers be so different from baby to baby?!

Make sure you follow the baby deal details/requirements

It used to be pretty straight forward where it was spend $100 on basically any and all baby supplies. Now I find the deals mostly pertain to diapers, wipes, rash cream, lotions and soaps and are a little more targeted towards particular products.

I used to be on the look out every month or so, but they seem to be offering deals every week that vary slightly. Most of the time you will have to select “same day services” which means you can do drive up or pick up in stores to get the deal too.

My typical rotation

Like I said I follow this rotation and here is a sampling of how I go about ordering supplies/food for baby:

Order #1

As mentioned order 2-3 packs of diapers (generally mega packs and the size below) mega packs are $39.99 and the size below is $24.99.

Then I add the best wipes.

This will put me right at or over $100 if I do it correctly. I will check inventory on diaper pail refills, rash cream, shampoos, and anything else that qualifies to see if I need those items at that time. If there is something I need I ditch the $24.99 diaper pack and stock up on the other little items.

Once I hit $100 with whatever product combination that adds up to it, I triple check it all adds up and falls within the deal requirements and use my…TARGET REDCARD

I love this debit card – comes right out of the bank no billing hassle and you get 5% off every time you use it, free shipping ALWAYS and an extra 30 days for returns.

The $20 gift card will be sent via email or automatically be uploaded into your Target.com account.

Order #2 – Using the $20 Giftcard

At this point I will normally wait (if I can) until a new deal comes up (they have new weekly deals that start on Sunday I believe, but I also keep a look out in my emails if I see something mid week).

If there is a new deal say on food, I will try to follow that promotion (normally not as good). They used to have an awesome Formula promotion. Spend $75 in baby formula and get $15 gift card, but I haven’t seen that in a while – anyway I will usually stock up on 2 or 3 of these formulas using the $20 gift card toward that purchase.

$19.99 for this container compared to $35.99 for a 34oz container of Similac

My old coworker actually introduced me to the Up&Up formula. I used to get the name brands – Similac, Enfamil – and she said if you read the labels they are the same.

Mind blown! I was paying less and getting more per container…

If there is a deal on purees, I will normally purchase those while I’m at it or wait and use the next gift card I receive towards that (you get the picture!)

Things to note:

I have not done subscribe and save services. I’m not sure why, I think I like being in control of what I truly need, when I happen to need it and really pay attention closely to my inventories. Also, I know SO many people that rave about Costco diapers, wipes and formula – I have not tried them and would be curious the savings between the promotions I use at Target and what you save at Costco (membership is required).

Target Red Circle offers even more additional discounts. They actually happen to be offering 10% baby products right now. You can sign up for Red Circle through your Target.com account or download the app.

Using the Target Red Card you get 5% off EVERY purchase. Just for using it and it works as a Debit card. I highly recommend opening one – hassle free!

The same thing can be done for household essentials as well. They offer many deals on things like dish soaps, toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning supplies.

Baby supplies can be EXPENSIVE! It is hard to compromise on certain name brands because you want to feel like you are giving your baby the ABSOLUTE best! Be a smart shopper – the Target brand Up&Up is super quality in my opinion and I have used their product’s for all three kiddos!

Use coupons, discounts, deals to your advantage and fall into a rotation that works for you that anticipates the supplies you will be needing! If you can plan ahead, you will avoid being smashed with the costs of having to make an impulse/last minute purchase when a deal could have been used to your advantage!
